Sunrise at sea
December 13th 2006 17:58
There is something about a sunrise at sea. It somehow seems more dramatic, certainly more beautiful and allways worthwhile getting outof your bunk for.
The seas are generaly calmer as there is less wind so it is easier to spot fish in the ripple free water. Dolphins can be prolific at all times of the day and night but in the early morning sunrise they too seem to make an extra effort at enjoying themselves.
Is that why we love dolphins so much? That they seem to have fun. Most of the animal kingdom is out there busy, busy, busy living life from one meal to the next oportunity to fornicate and make the next generation. The dolphin takes time out to have fun. Actualy now that I think about it lots of animals do that and that is when we love them the most.
This sunrise pic. was taken as we were leaving on a delivery from port Stephens to Lake Macquarie. We had not yet raised the headsail, being under motor with the main just drawing as there was hardly any wind. the seas were small but lumpy and as we took a short cut near Fingal Head the back wash from the cliffs made the sea quite uncomfortable in our small (25') yacht.
Sunrise is also important to sailors as it is proof that they have survived another night at sea. It is another opportunity to swill rum, look for shore leave and become sensless before the next approaching night.
With only a matter of eleven sleeps till Chrismas I had better get back to my rum swilling as I am shore bound for a couple of days till my next adventure on the Pittwater/Hawkesbury system on the weekend.
