Confessions of a sailing instructor

Confessions of a sailing instructor.
Probably ever since ‘The Banjo” penned and published Clancy Of The Overflow, people have wondered who really has the best job. Banjo Paterson feared that Clancy would never swap places with him, never leave the Cooper or trade the “sunlit plains extended” for “the dark and dingy office”. As one toils at their chosen grind it is easy to slip off into a fit of fancy and ponder what might be. Well for my money, being a sailing instructor is what it is all about. My office does not have “grimy windows”, nor do I hear “the gutter children sniping”. My office changes from day to day from a J 24 to a Benneteau 41

And lots of boats in between as well. Going to work in a tinny, living aboard when required to and just generally goofing about with boats and being paid for it is my dream come true. But it was not always like that, I had to bite the bullet and make the sea change.
Trained as a chef, working in pubs and restaurants, with food and booze laid on seemed a pretty ideal lifestyle as well. I also spent many years in the travel industry, being paid to travel around exotic locations often with an entourage of young travel agents in tow. I can’t tell you much about that part of my life as a lot of it is still under the cone of silence and will probably remain so while those that took part still have the marbles to remember.

However one day glancing through a newspaper I saw an ad for Sailing Instructors Wanted, will train experienced dinghy and skiff sailors. Applying for that ad I met Terry Wise who had been teaching people to sail professionally for about 24 years at that stage and thought he was getting the hang of it by now. Terry has probably helped train more sailing instructors in the industry than anyone else. He is tough on them as well. Working three hour shifts out on the harbour, doing nothing else but sailing in the bright sunlight, then expecting them to come back and socialize (often on his credit card) with students at the end of the day. It wears out the ones that are in it just for the money.
Financial wealth does not become a factor as a sailing instructor. You aren’t going to save up and drive a Roller that’s for sure. But if it’s good clean air you’re after, meeting people from all walks of life from all over the world and just not stressing out about anything except whether to overtake a boat on port or starboard, then this could be the life for you. Money just can’t be important to you. You will make enough to pay the rent, as long as you live in a little shack by a lake (as I do) or perhaps you are lucky enough to live with your mum and dad. You are probably going to need a second job to be able to eat but that is probably not so important if you get the chance to sail all the time. And let me tell you about the girls!!!!
