Boat Heaven - Boat Heaven

Are you lonely on a beach?

What is it about a lonely beach and a single soul tramping along it? Probably the most popular admitted to pastime by single females (research by myself over 6 singles sites) is walking along a beach. Particularly a moonlit beach and more so with their lover. It has a certain charm and it has romance and the sound of waves breaking on the sand in a regular rhythm has a calming effect. It doesn’t make the said female any more pliant I can assure you but they do love a walk along the beach.

Advertising agencies looking to promote a product to senior citizens often has an elderly (wrinkle free) good looking couple strolling along a beach holding hands absolutely carefree dreamily looking into each other’s eyes.
Had that same couple been taped forty five years earlier by the same agency as teenagers they would have been highly active and showing a strong sex drive which was bought on by the consuming of a product that came in a suggestively shaped bottle.

As a fisherman I love a quiet deserted beach where I can set up my beach rod and bait bucket and drift off into a world of my own. Finding the right spot to be on a deserted beach is also a dilemma. Every square metre of sand is exactly the same as the next isn’t it? No, one must walk and test and get the feeling for just the right spot. Then having done so watch the crowds gravitate. I notice this particularly when I am fishing. Dad arrives on the beach with the kids and the Sunday paper. He is going to immerse himself in a deep meaningless read and wants no interruptions, so where better to send the kids to play and paddle than in front of the poor unsuspecting fisherman. Talk about trying to mind your own business.

Was this the secret of Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe? A single soul on a lonely beach, happy with his lot until some bugger comes along and sticks his footprint in the sand.

Beautifully said. I too love a nice long walk on a beach. Its a chance to reflect, to get out in nature, and enjoy yourself.

What a great post Tom. I had to have a chuckle about Robinson Crusoe! I can just imagine that!
Isn`t it so true that whenever you are on the beach, or anywhere with loads of space for that matter, people will always congregate right next to you? Even though they have all the other space in the world!
Can be frustrating at time!

I love the feeling of being alone on a beach - with the waves crashing beside you, it feels as if you're the only person, standing at the edge of the world. It's a great remedy for when the stresses of city life and crowds get you down.

... or if anything else gets you down.

All the beach walkers sould actually try getting off the beach and into the ocean... it gives you that same feeling

Thanks for the comment Nina, not only does it relieve stress but it is just the best place to hide without having to get under a rock!

Hi Tom,
Well I am trying to but as you say sometimes they are rather over crowded. I have a friend who has just come back from Cairns way and said he came across so many deserted beaches - I can`t wait to check them out!
Happy Travels

Once you get up north in the real outback you have to realise one of the reasons why the beaches are bare is because crocs live there. An unfortunate thing in Oz that we have the odd bitey and it gets to live pretty well wherever it likes.
