A pub crawl without beer

A pub-crawl without beer!
This weekend I was to take a bunch of fellow students on a pub-crawl of historic Tassie pubs, by mini bus. I was the designated driver and would stay dry till we got to Bicheno and parked the bus. Then I would hit the slops big time. The bus was booked and deposited and the drinkers were eagerly looking forward to a debauched weekend of alcohol cigarettes and probably pools of vomit. A surprise exam on Monday took the wind out of everyone’s sails. Better to stay home and study rather than face an exam with a beer induced hangover.
Well I had been looking forward to the touring side of the trip for some time. I decided to go ahead and do my part of the tour anyway. I had budgeted the time and money and as I got my deposit back on the bus and I had a loan car for two weeks I was off first thing this morning. A matter of scraping the ice off the windows, peering through the fog and I was away. The idea was to leave early and visit as many historic pubs as possible on the East coast as far as Bicheno. So far it has been a brilliant trip. The car, an old Holden Astra of indeterminate vintage purred along without missing a beat and the beautiful country side flashed by mile after gorgeous mile. Even the road kill looked delicious enough to eat, what a morning.
The guys will be disappointed when I describe the pubs they could have been thrown out of or barred from. The pubs here are not just historic but ancient. Where I am staying in Bicheno is not so much a historic pub as a well situated resort style pub. Right on the beach with a walkway along cliff tops and old timber cray fishing boats moored in the bay. The room cost $50 for the night and I have my own facilities and a view out over the bay. Meals are from $10 for wood fired pizza to $22 for surf & turf, I am pretty sure of a good feed after Stalag rations at the college, (which does help me loose weight.) The sun is out, it is cold but it is heaven. The barmaids look to be my vintage so I will give it a go tonight.
More tomorrow.
