What is your dream destination
October 24th 2006 20:47
What is your dream destination? You have your boat, it is all kitted out and ready to go. Your crew, if you need one is keen and well trained. You have all the time and inclination to go where you want.
Is it the dream of tropical islands with golden sand beaches facing reef locked turquoise lagoons with fringing palm trees whispering their secrets in answer to the warm breath of the trade winds.
Perhaps the waters of deep and steep sided sounds in the land of the midnight sun. Crusty fisherman puttering out from their homely villages to ply their trade among the herring schools.
The stark spleandour of the Antarctic with creaking ice and sun unfiltered by industry. Penguins and sea lions, whales and crisp dry lungsearing air, forming volumes of cloud around your face as you breathe deep the clean air of a wilderness.
A simple day out in your cruiser, parking near a bechside pub and going ashore with the gang and simply chilling out in the beer garden and watching the sun set over your boat.
My Ideal cruise is to head north, spend time fishing and diving on the barrier reef and then head out from Cairns to the Trobriand Islands. On the way visit more reefs for fishing and then if at all possible settle in to the Trobes for about 6 months. I want to learn about their culture, their inter-island navigation methods, their canoe building and the way of the trade routes. I am not a historian or a researcher I am just inquisitive about a life style. The fact that they are called "The love islands" has no bearing on the matter!
I think everyone has a dream cruising destination and if they can put it down in words on paper it is possibly a step closer to reality. But then perhaps if we did that the dream would not be there? Perhaps we need that dream sitting out there like a carrot in front of a donkey to help make it through the drudgery of another day.
Luckily my days are becoming quite drudgery free and as I get closer to my retirement my dream is getting closer as well.

Motherhood
My dream destination would have to be Astoria, Oregon...
Always has been my dream, always will be.
Sailing there might be a bit tricky, but I'm sure I could work out a route (or get my father to!)
Glad to hear your dreams are close to coming true!

Flashes of memories
I would love to sail around Mexico/Caribbean then head north for Alaska to catch the Northern
lights - it has always intrigued me.
