A doting dad part 2
October 10th 2006 20:11
I was no longer a young man when I was pitted against my son in the swimming pool. He had a swimmers body after all the training he had been doing. I on the other hand was drinking beer and wine but still training reasonably hard to play grade water polo.
I had a five second start on him in the way of a club handicap in a 100 metre breaststroke race and that first race he whooped my arse. Then as the season went on we had more competition and I can honestly say it was some of the most exciting stuff I have done. I did on occasion manage to beat him but not often.
He followed me into the sport of sailing and after sending me to the poor house with the demands of sailing at a national level, (new hi tech boats, all the right sailing clothes and the travel) he had ended up in the top 10% of junior sailors in the country. Worth all the effort particularly as when I can't race my own boat I can allways ask him to come along and skipper for me. His desire to win at all cost is well above mine and when he races my boat he takes no prisoners. The first time he did this I had a crew on board who was a bikie gang chief and my son was bossing him around as though he were one of his school mates. Trust me this crew looks like he eats living flesh.
He follwed me to my old school and there distinguished himself in sport representing the school in swimming, water polo, sailing at the highest level. His peers elected him to house captain and school prefect. Like me he was however lazy at proper school work. (Though now he is at university)
I guess as a dad I spoiled him, as did his mum being our only child. If the worst thing you ever do is spoil your child then you can't be that bad a parent. I know my son realises he has been spoilt and though he never denied himself of what we offered he did and still does appreciate it.
I hope that I have many more opportunities to dote on him.
